'Mechans Ltd.' ironstone pottery lifeboat

'Mechans Ltd.' ironstone pottery lifeboat

A rare white ironstone pottery presentation lifeboat, mounted on a wooden plaque advertising 'Mechans Ltd. Scotstoun Iron Works, Glasgow'.

Established in 1862 by Arthur Mechan at Cranstounhill and incorporated into a limited company in 1904, in 1914 Mechans were noted as 'General engineers & boatbuilders. Specialities: marine, gold mining, water, cyanide and sugar plants. Employees 1,700'.

One of the heavy engineering giants of Glasgow on the banks of the Clyde, magazine and paper adverts from the turn of the century show that they made everything from steel pipes for gas, sewage and water to frames & parts for the recently invented motor car. Specialising in marine engineering, their ships telegraphs and lifeboats were used by most of the major shipping lines of the time, which are listed on the wooden plaque of this presentation lifeboat - 'Canadian Pacific, Blue Funnel, Cunard, Shaw Savill & Port Line'.

A scarce and unusual display piece, they were likely to have been produced in small numbers and given to shipping line headquarters for presentation in boardrooms.

28cm long (11")
10.2cm wide (4")
29.5cm wide (11-5/8")
13.4cm deep (5-1/4")

In very good condition, there is a small firing split line on the inside of the back of the boat, but the pottery is perfect otherwise. Some wear and marks commensurate with age, with what appears to be remains of a lacquer on the boat which has turned yellowish over the years.

  • International customers and combined shipping

International buyers (outside of the UK) - When you add an item to your cart you can select a shipping destination and the postage will be calculated. Usually this is correct, but for multiple purchases and larger items it is advisable to enquire before purchasing, as shipping is based on rough estimates to different regions and may vary to that stated. You may 'buy it now' with the shipping cost calculated, but if this is incorrect we may contact you after purchase. We will either issue a refund for the difference, or request for a remaining postage balance to be paid, either way we will always contact you before any changes are made. Our standard postage costs include tracking where possible and usually require a signature upon receipt, please also include a contact phone number when ordering. Postage to P.O. boxes must be enquired about before purchase as many shippers do not deliver to them.

*Multiple purchases - If you would like to purchase multiple items we can usually combine shipping. It is best to message us first for a shipping quote, but to avoid missing out you can purchase items through the website immediately without paying a shipping fee. Add the desired pieces to your cart, then view your cart and in order summary there is a drop down menu with postage options. Select *Multiple purchases & combined shipping* and the shipping price will be removed. You can now pay for your selected items and we will contact you with a shipping quote to then be paid separately.
